Every visit to the National Children’s Museum (NCM) should be an exciting learning experience. We know that every visitor will encounter the Museum in his or her own way. To ensure that children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and their caregivers have a great experience, NCM‘s Education Team will be developing a social story for the new Museum.

Click here to open the Launch Zone Story PDF.

A social story describes a situation, concept, or social skill in a way that is meaningful to people with ASD.  A social story helps caregivers prepare a child with ASD for a specific experience, thus ensuring greater understanding and a better outcome for everyone involved. The ultimate goal of the social story is to ensure a positive visit for children with ASD and their caregiver as well as encourage others to be sensitive towards visitors with ASD.

Prior to opening, NCM has developed a social story for the Launch Zone to provide children and their caregivers with anticipatory information and support. We welcome your feedback and encourage you to share your impressions with us—specifically, please tell us:

•  Did the social story give you the insight you needed for a successful visit?
•  Is there information missing that should be included?  If so, what?
•  Is the tone (the voice) respectful and helpful?

Please send your comments and questions to SocialStory@ncm.museum.
